UNPAID PANDEMIC LEAVE & ANNUAL LEAVE CHANGES TO AWARDS

The Fair Work Commission has added a temporary new schedule into 99 awards to provide greater flexibility during the coronavirus pandemic. The temporary schedule gives employees: 2 weeks of unpaid pandemic leave the ability to take twice as much annual leave at half their normal pay if their employer agrees. The schedule applies from an employee's first full pay period on or after 8 April 2020 until 30 June 2020. Find out more at Unpaid pandemic leave & annual leave changes to awards. UPDATE TO JOBKEEPER SCHEME

The Fair Work Act has been amended to support the implementation and operation of the JobKeeper wage subsidy scheme (JobKeeper scheme) in Australian workplaces. These changes are temporary and will end on 28 September 2020. The changes give eligible employers the ability to give certain directions to and make agreements with their eligible employees to help manage their business. REOPENING RESTAURANTS & CAFES

In line with advice from the Chief Health Officer, the Victorian Government has announced its plan to cautiously and carefully reopen our state's restaurants and cafes, helping to restore jobs and rebuild our economy. Under the proposed plan, restaurants and cafes will be able to resume dine-in service: From 1 June with up to 20 patrons per enclosed space From 22 June with up to 50 patrons per enclosed space With up to 100 patrons per enclosed space during the second half of July. CITY OF BALLARAT BUDGET DRAFT 2020-2021

Ballarat's Council draft budget has been released for public input and submission at a time that, outside of the world wars, there has never been greater social and economic uncertainty. The draft budget brings us into greater debt with $17 million being an annual increase of around $600 per household that will be eventually paid for by us in increased rates, even if frozen this year. LOCAL GOOD NEWS STORY! 6 May 2020

Five Ballarat businesses will share in more than $650,000 of federal funding to upgrade their equipment, keep employees in work, and provide long-term confidence. Congratulations to C. E. Bartlett and Grounded Pleasures that are among these businesses that will receive between $280,000 and $85,000 of in-kind funding for projects like acquiring new equipment and training workers. $491 MILLION RELIEF FOR VICTORIAN BUSINESSES

Victorian businesses participating in the Commonwealth's JobKeeper scheme will not be exempt from payroll tax and the WorkCover premium on payments to their employees if their staff are currently stood down. Payments to employees not stood down but receiving more income as a result JobKeeper than their regular pay will aslo be exempt from payroll tax and the WorkCover premium. The Government will also freeze all fees and fines that were due to be increased in July at current levels – including car registration, traffic infringements, court-imposed penalties and permit fees. JOBKEEPER BUSINESS REGISTRATIONS EXTENDED

The Commissioner has extended the time to enrol for the initial JobKeeper periods, from 30 April 2020 until 31 May 2020. If you enrol by 31 May, you will still be able to claim for the fortnights in April and May – provided you meet all the eligibility requirements for each of those fortnights. FIONA ELSEY IDENTIFIES IMMUNE MECHANISM 6 May 2020

Researchers at the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute have made progress in understanding how a specific type of immune cell is involved in the development of lesions associated with Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH). This research has been recently recognised and published in international medical journal, Clinical Immunology. It is hoped that these findings will lead to a better way to treat patients with LCH. LCH is a rare type of cancer, mostly found in children. CITY OF BALLARAT LAUNCHES GET ACTIVE HEALTH HUB 28 April 2020

The Ballarat community will now be able to exercise at home with a free Get Active Health Hub. The new Hub will provide Ballarat residents with free online active workout videos and content, which will be showcased on the Ballarat Aquatic and Lifestyle Centre (BALC) website. The content, which has been created by the City of Ballarat's Sport and Active Living and BALC teams, will include pre-recorded workout videos with BALC instructors, stretch and move working from home content, mental health and wellbeing videos, nutrition resources and checklists and activities which residents can do with household items. LOCAL GOOD NEWS STORY 8 April 2020

As Covid19 spreads across the country a team of local businesses have stepped up to produce a hospital ventilator from scratch in just five days. The brain child of Sandy and Elizabeth Lewis-Gray from Gekko Systems, the ventilator is designed to be easily reproduced using high quality but simple componentry. Runway Ballarat was approached to assist with the 3D printing capability available through its "Certified" Fab Lab. The labs technician, Ian Firns, is no stranger to prototyping and refining ideas given his role in the team behind Eurekative who offer bespoke prototyping services from within the Runway Fablab facility. The team includes a number of leading physicians to ensure the prototypes effectiveness. Funding for the ventilator has been spearheaded by Committee of Ballarat with donations already reaching the $150,000 mark. The project is currently seeking approvals from the State Government in order to progress to the next stages.  Read more »

GAS PRICES AND FUTURE SUPPLY

The 2020 supply demand outlook in the east coast gas market has improved and LNG netback prices have decreased, but domestic prices remain high and there is significant uncertainty about future supplies, according to the Gas Inquiry 2017-25 Interim Report released by the ACCC today. The report found that the supply outlook for 2020 has improved slightly since July 2019 but beyond 2020 there is significant uncertainty about whether future demand can be met. -Southern states risk facing a shortfall in the medium term unless there is more exploration and development in the south, or new infrastructure to bring more supply to southern states,- ACCC Chair Rod Sims said. PRODUCTIVITY GROWTH AN URGENT PRIORITY

The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry is urging federal and state governments to make productivity growth an urgent policy priority in order to protect the living standards of Australians, following the release of the Productivity Commission's report today. ACCI Chief Economist Ross Lambie said  -the Productivity Commission's analysis reinforces the need for governments to identify and act upon opportunities to increase productivity. Brett Macdonald is a familiar face and voice for Ballarat, he started his management career at Radio Ballarat as Program Director. This included the launch of Power FM and conversion of 3BA to the FM Band. The Ballarat RCB operates as a service to the region's employers who have critical skill shortages that cannot be filled from the local labour market.
