CONGRATS TO BALLARAT & DISTRICT TROTTING CLUB 30 October 2019

Ballarat and District Trotting Club was crowned the top country club at the Gordon Rothacker Medal night on Sunday, while Ballarat also produced the trainer, owner and breeder of the year, and a string of horse of the year awards. This the 12th time the BDTC has been named the state's number one club. Hosting the second round of Inter Dominion heats in December was a highlight of the club's 2018-19 season. PLASTIC BAGS BANNED NOVEMBER 1ST

The Victorian Government will implement a state-wide ban on lightweight plastic shopping bags from 1 November 2019. The ban applies to ALL retailers – including supermarkets, greengrocers, bakeries, pharmacies, clothes stores, restaurants, cafes, markets, food outlets, and many more. The ban will apply to all lightweight plastic shopping bags which have a thickness of 35 microns or less at any part of the bag, including degradable, biodegradable and compostable bags. Sunday was the final day with record crowds for the weekend of over 2,500 coming through the International exhibition Liu Bolin Camouflage before flooding through the streets of Ballarat to enjoy the rich program positioned across Ballarat highlighting in the new National Centre For Photography. With over 29,000 unique visitors in two months, it has been another record crowd for the Biennale. MAIR STREET UPGRADE

Mair Street is a high-volume, important corridor connecting local businesses, retailers and schools in the area. Improvements to Mair Street will improve safety, ease traffic congestion and promote the corridor as a main road through the CBD. Stage 1 improvements between Victoria Street and Davies St, are currently under construction, tools go down on this from December 1 2019 until January 12 2020 so that works don't impact Christmas shopping on Mair Street. MAIR STREET WORKS TO BEGIN

This project is a VicRoads project but an important part of the City of Ballarat's CBD Strategy: Making Ballarat Central. The next phase of works is planned to start in the next two weeks. The Victoria Street to Humffray Street section will take approximately six weeks to complete, while the Humffray to Davies Street section will take up to 14 weeks. RRV is committed to a no works period between December 1, 2019 and January 12, 2020 to allow for uninterrupted Christmas shopping on Mair Street. Read more »

CHANGES TO PUBLIC HOLIDAY SUBSTITUTION RULES

On 4 October 2019, terms allowing an employer to unilaterally substitute a public holiday or substitute a public holiday with agreement from the majority of their staff will be removed from awards that contain them. Instead, employers and individual employees can agree to substitute another day (or part-day) for a public holiday. VICTORIA'S PLASTIC BAG BAN NOVEMBER 1ST

​​​​​​​Is your business ready for the Victorian bag ban? Local businesses are being urged to prepare ahead of the state-wide ban on lightweight plastic shopping bags. BUSINESS CONFIDENCE SURVEY 

We are excited to share with you that we are working on a project with Federation Business School to evaluate business conditions in the Ballarat region. Our shared objective with this report is to assist local business and government at all levels when making future decisions on planning and direction. Here is the link to the survey for the first round of this project, the project is led by Dr. Moulik Zaveri, lecturer at the Federation Business School. Participation in this survey is purely voluntary; however in order to gain maximum benefit we need for you to spare 8 - 10 minutes to complete the survey. The value of Victoria's burgeoning visitor economy has soared to $30 billion, cementing tourism as a key driver of the state's economy and a jobs powerhouse. New figures released by Tourism Research Australia show Victoria welcomed 90.6 million international and domestic visitors who spent $30 billion in the year to March ­– growth of 11.2 per cent and 10.3 per cent respectively. Ballarat Golf Club have won the Inclusion Award at the Victorian Golf Industry Awards at the Arts Centre in Melbourne last week. A joint initiative between the PGA, Golf Australia - Victoria and Golf Management Victoria, the evening was a celebration of the people and organisations that have made significant achievements and contributions to the sport, as well as being a general celebration of Victorian golf. The Inclusion Initiative of the Year Award is designed to recognise clubs, individuals or organisations who take significant steps to attract, welcome or include people with a disability, cultural or diverse backgrounds or indigenous communities into their club activities. The Western Bulldogs' Round 23 clash with the Adelaide Crows at Mars Stadium this Sunday has officially sold out. Due to high demand, and the capacity of Mars Stadium, no further tickets will be released for sale and no general admission membership scans or public tickets will be available on match-day. The Australian Chamber backs the latest call for greater balance in the unfair dismissal system to better support small business owners trying to do the right thing, but who are exposed to costly and time-consuming claims. HER MAJESTY'S THEATRE TO REOPEN 13 SEPTEMBER 7 August 2019

Her Majesty's Ballarat will re-open on Friday 13 September for the Royal South Street Society's prestigious Aria competition. Established in 1924, Australia's oldest and most renowned prize for emerging classical singers will be the first event to return to the restored historic raked stage at Her Majesty's Ballarat since the theatre was closed for extensive restorations in late 2017. $5.3 million was allocated for the restorative works at Her Majesty's as soon as the safety issue was identified in 2017. These works have been supported by a $2 million grant under the Victorian Government's Living Heritage Program.  Read more »

FIONA ELSEY CANCER RESEARCH NEWS BREAKTHROUGH 7 August 2019

Australia has one of the highest rates of Bowel cancer in the world. It is the third most diagnosed form of cancer in Australia and the second largest killer. Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute recently announced the publication of an important piece of research from their Bowel Cancer team. Research conducted at the Institute, has discovered that a subset of immune cells in the bowel can misbehave and actually promote bowel cancer and inhibit other immune cells. This publication in international journal Immunology & Cell Biology, is a great example of the ground-breaking work that the team at the Institute, is doing into the immunology of cancer. Planning is underway nice and early for the continued development of a 'festival of cycling' in early 2020. The Buninyong Community working group will once again meet monthly to determine the engagement opportunities for the town as well as any new ways to leverage this national event, and a CBD working group will also be developed, including Commerce Ballarat, local traders, stakeholders etc to engage in discussions around the opportunities that exist with the criterium event held in the heart of the CBD. Earlier this week, the Ballarat Turf Club (BTC) announced that there will be a major increase in prize money on Ballarat Cup Day, Saturday 23rd November 2019. Article by PRP Ballarat - Ballarat Times The times have changed, and Armstrong St North has evolved from a suburban retail shopping strip to a foodie's paradise. What we now consider as Ballarat's main takeaway food and dining hub didn't exist 10 years ago. The strip, between Sturt and Mair streets, had a grand total of five eateries, of which only three still exist today. Today, there are a total of 17 eateries, a far cry from the five in 2009. RED SERIES HITS BALLARAT 10 July 2019

Plate Up Ballarat have been working with wineries from the Grampians and Pyrenees regions on an event called the Red Series. The event will host 20 wineries showcasing their red wine and other varietals, together in the Ballarat Mining Exchange for one day only, and is expected to draw a crowd. VICTORIAN GOVERNMENT ARTISANAL GRANTS 3 July 2019

Congratulations to Kilderkin Distillery and Red Duck Brewery who have both received funding under the Victorian Government Artisanal Sector Stage One Grants program. In both cases the maximum grant of $5000 has been awarded. For Red Duck, the funding is to contribute to a mobile bar that can be used for events and will streamline the process of providing quality beers at a wide range of different venues. Kilderkin Distillery received the funding as a contribution to a bottle labelling machine that has the capacity to label over 1000 bottles per hour - a major improvement on their current labelling which is essentially done by hand on a small machine. 2019 PROGRAM LAUNCH 26 June 2019

On Wednesday 19th of June Ballarat International Foto Biennale were super excited to launch their 2019 Program headlined by Liu Bolin. The exhibition examines Liu Bolin's career over almost two decades; from his best-known Hiding in the City series initiated in 2005 until the present day. The exhibition aims to demonstrate how the artist's strategy of camouflage has allowed him to produce images which resonate globally with viewers across time and place. BALLARAT GOVHUB UPDATE

Works are progressing well at the Ballarat GovHub site with demolition now complete. All works on site are subject to strict controls in accordance with construction regulation. As construction continues there may be an increase in noise due to larger excavators on site to enable heavy rock breaking. Foundation piling is also anticipated which could generate higher levels of noise. This noise could occur over the next three weeks. Any potential increases in noise will be on an intermittent basis. Noise levels will be constantly monitored to ensure works on site do not exceed construction regulations. Construction will continue to take place between 7.00am – 5.00pm Monday to Friday and 7.00am – 3.30pm on Saturday, with no noisy works occurring before 9.00am on Saturday. The Fair Work Ombudsman undertook the education and compliance campaign in regional areas of Australia, reaching out to employers in Ballarat (Vic), Wollongong (NSW), Albury-Wodonga (Vic/NSW). L2P DRIVING PROGRAM BALLARAT 19 June 2019

L2P Driving Program - Ballarat are on the lookout for more volunteer mentors to supervise young learner drivers who have no access to a car or supervising driver and require support and supervision to complete the 120 hours of practice needed to sit the test. We are looking for volunteers who will be a positive role model, bring skills, experience and encouragement to a learner in a non-threatening and safe environment. MINIMUM WAGE TO RISE BY 3.5%

The Fair Work Commission has announced a 3.0% increase to minimum wages. The new national minimum wage will be $740.80 per week or $19.49 per hour. The increase applies from the first full pay period starting on or after 1 July 2019. With over 12% in wage increases since 2016, if you have not reviewed your employee's remuneration for a number of years, you may be at risk of under paying wages. In its NINTH year, the Ballarat's Biggest EVER Blokes' Lunch is being held on Friday September 6, 2019 Mercure Ballarat Hotel and Convention Centre. The tourism economy represents a significant driver of regional economic growth. However, the shortage of skilled workers in relevant occupations has been noted as a challenge faced by many operators within Ballarat and Western Victoria. PRO BUSINESS ELECTION POLICIES KEY 15 May 2019

As Australians head to the polls this weekend, many businesses will be keenly watching for pro-business promises from the elected party. The most recent Survey of Business Trends and Prospects from the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, released today, shows business sentiment is at a three-year low, with only 14 per cent of businesses anticipating stronger national growth in the year ahead. A proposal to allocate $15 million towards stage one Bakery Hill and Bridge Mall precinct works will be considered at tonight's Ballarat City Council meeting. The project will include the re-opening of Bridge Mall to sensitively and safely designed vehicular and pedestrian traffic. STAGE ONE OF SMARTER PARKING PLAN TO BEGIN 1 May 2019

The first stage of the City of Ballarat's Smarter Parking Plan is about to begin. Streets in the plan's Zone 2, bounded by Ripon, Eyre, Princes, and Mill and Seymour streets, will have new parking configurations rolled out over the next few months.Residents will receive a free Residential Parking Permit which will allow them to park free in any parking space near their house, except for bus zones, loading bays and no stopping zones and also a week to register any concerns, which will be followed by a meeting with City of Ballarat if required to address any issues. For more information, click here.  Read more »

BALLARAT HOSPICE BUILDING UPDATE 1 May 2019

Construction of the Ballarat Hospice Palliative Care Hub commenced in August of 2018. Construction of the hub is progressing very well, and is on schedule for completion mid-year. The building consists of three intersecting buildings, each with a different purpose, but collectively providing all of the elements required for Ballarat Hospice Care to continue caring for people who require palliative care services. NEW LABOUR HIRE LICENSING SCHEME

The new scheme uses a definition of labour hire that may capture a range of businesses who do not traditionally consider themselves to be a labour hire business, such as those that provide outsourced services. Businesses who provide labour services will have six months, or until 29 October 2019 to register online and apply for a licence. The Victorian Chamber is encouraging members to review the information on the Labour Hire Licencing Authority website and to contact the authority if they are unsure of whether they will be required to obtain a licence. NEW MANDATORY WORDING FOR WARRANTIES

If your business offers warranties against defects when supplying services, or when supplying goods combined with services, you will need to comply with new requirements coming into force on 9 June 2019. What is changing is that if you offer a warranty against defects when supplying services, or goods combined with services, you will need to display new mandatory text from 9 June 2019. Congratulations to Kilderkin Distillery on recently being awarded medals for its gin at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Kilderkin's Buccaneer and Barrel Aged Silver gin were both awarded silver medals, whilst its Original and Scoundrel gin were awarded bronze. RIGHT TO THE NIGHT PROJECT WINS MAV TECHNOLOGY AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE 3 April 2019

Independent judges praised the project as being an excellent example of a people first, technology second initiative. Just over four out of 10 Ballarat residents agreed that they felt safe walking alone in their local area after dark, which is significantly less than the Victorian average.The Right to the Night project uses an online platform for women and girls to map which areas of Ballarat they feel safe in after dark, and which they don't. Analysis of this data identified ways to improve community safety across other localities, both within the municipality and further afield. Read more »

To become a part of the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute Charity Day, you must fill out the attached entry form. The charity day will take place Wednesday 8th May, 2019 at Midlands Golf Club, costing $120 per team of four (lunch included) and entries must be completed by Friday May 3rd 2019. As Australia's only regionally based cancer research center, Fiona Elsey are non-government funded, and rely on the generous support of the community to continue research into more effective ways to diagnose and treat cancer. CYBER SECURITY AWARENESS SURVEY 27 March 2019

Cyber breaches are a major risk to business and too often businesses are complacent about their Cyber Security Risks. BALLARAT BEER HOP 20 March 2019

This Easter Saturday (April 20th) you can work your way through 6 of Ballarat's favourite venues who will be featuring 12 of Ballarat and Victoria's top Breweries, and six of the regions best Wineries! Each of the six venue will play host to two breweries and one winery. You can purchase a ticket for the venue where you would like to start, and then follow the map to find the other venues at your own leisure. The event kicks off at your first venue at 11AM. PICASSO: THE VOLLARD SUITE 20 March 2019

The Vollard Suite is regarded as one of the greatest print suites, and perhaps the most enigmatic and famous of the twentieth century, comprised of 100 intaglio prints by Pablo Picasso. The National Gallery of Australia is one of the few cultural institutions in the world to hold the complete suite of 100.
