VICTORIAN DIGITAL DRIVERS LICENCE

From May 2024, Victorians who are full licence holders will be able to access their digital driver licence in the myVicRoads app or the Service Victoria app. If you or your organisation rely on photo identification for verification purposes, you are encouraged to prepare your business. RESILIENT READY WORKSHOP 10 April 2024

The Resilient Ready program offers a personalised business resilience toolkit and ten 5-minute e-learning modules featuring local business case interviews. A swath of restaurants across regional Victoria closed in the weeks and days before Easter, unable to hang on through a traditionally busy trading period. Owners blame spiralling interest rates cutting into disposable incomes, hikes in power costs, government tax increase on liquor licences, and higher insurance premiums. Commerce Ballarat CEO Jodie Gillett quotes figures she has gleaned from local businesses. "The electricity bill for one business was $5500 in October 2023; now it's $8000," she says. ENGINEERED STONE TO BE BANNED IN VICTORIA THIS JULY

From 1 July 2024, the use, manufacturing, supply, processing and installation of engineered stone will be banned in Victoria. Some exceptions will be made for the removal, repair, minor modification, and disposal of engineered stone products installed prior to the prohibition (legacy products), as well as appropriate exceptions for engineered stone products with trace levels of crystalline silica (under 1%).Until 1 July 2024, Victoria’s current Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) laws in relation to exposure to silica dust or working with engineered stone, and the associated employer obligations, remain in place.READ MORE Read more »

NEW FAIR WORK CHANGES

As part of the new Protecting Worker Entitlements laws, there have been changes to the Fair Work Act, including changes to employee authorised deductions and superannuation in the National Employment Standards. These came into effect on Saturday, 30 December 2023 and Monday, 1 January 2024 respectively. There are also changes that took place mid-last year to unpaid parental leave, interaction between enterprise agreements and workplace determinations and protections for migrant workers. TIM BONE RETURNS TO TELEVSION 29 February 2024

Tim Bone is set to make a return to television for Channel 10's Good Chef and Bad Chef. Tim will fill the role of "bad chef", formerly held by renowned Australian chef Adrian Richardson and originally by MasterChef judge Garry Mehigan. Tim said the experience was as he was able to expand his own knowledge of more nutritional options. Tim is also hoping to inspire Ballarat to get in the kitchen and cook. All eyes from art galleries and museums around Australia will turn towards Ballarat this year after the city secured hosting rights for a major conference. Ballarat's biggest fundraiser, the Ballarat Cycle Classic, was held last weekend, raising over $309,000 for the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute. Lifeline Ballarat is hosting an applied suicide intervention skill training session over two days on Tuesday March 5 to Wednesday March 6. The City of Ballarat's 2023-24 budget features an increased investment in roads infrastructure, with $36.3 million for capital road programs and maintenance, which includes $3 million in Federal Government funding. The City of Ballarat's annual road renewal program is underway, delivering better roads for motorists. The Under 20 National Basketball Tournament arrives in Ballarat this week, bringing 32 teams and 465 participants to town. The tournament is a major boost for the local economy as it is expected to bring in $1.4 million in local expenditure. Ballarat is also expected to host over 8000 beds a night for the visitors and welcome 1,200 international guests from scouts.
