FREE PARKING BEGINS IN BALLARAT CBD 4 December 2019

Two months of free parking has begun across the CBD this weekend. However, time limits and parking restrictions, such as No Standing and Loading zones, will still apply. The current parking meters will be removed over December and January to allow for the installation of the Smarter Parking meters. The meters and the Smarter Parking app will be switched on in early February. Free parking will apply until January 31. FRIENDS OF INDIA NETWORK FUNDRAISER 4 December 2019

In Feb 2020, FIN's Annual Fundraiser will endeavour to help with development of "Fast Track" facility for Ballarat Health Services Emergency Department. Fast track(FT) is a steaming system whereby the triage nurse identifies those patients they have triaged as suitable for FT based on set criteria. Essentially they are the walking wounded who can be assessed and treated in a chair and under 2 hours. FIN would like to help ED with this project and your contribution big or small will make us realise this dream. Fiona Elsey are looking for volunteers over the month of December to help out with a number of markets and stalls. They're still looking for helpers for the Christmas Fest by the Lake this coming Friday, and would welcome any support you can provide. The market is based at Pleasant Street School, with set-up starting from 3pm. They have an indoor stall (so no concerns re inclement weather!!) and need to have coverage up until approximately 8-8.30pm. With almost 150 entries this year, the awards program is gaining momentum and recognition in the industry. BOXES OF JOY 27 November 2019

After another successful campaign last year and interest from the community, YMCA Ballarat are again assembling "Boxes of Joy" to help brighten Christmas time for young people experiencing disadvantage. Items should be new, small enough to fit in a shoe box and encourage play, activity, wellbeing or interaction. As they receive many requests from agencies for gifts for teenagers - small personal items for older children and teens are especially appreciated. Congratulations Peter Ford who this week celebrates 40 years since starting his apprenticeship! Ballarat and District Trotting Club was crowned the top country club at the Gordon Rothacker Medal night on Sunday, while Ballarat also produced the trainer, owner and breeder of the year, and a string of horse of the year awards. PLASTIC BAGS BANNED NOVEMBER 1ST

The Victorian Government will implement a state-wide ban on lightweight plastic shopping bags from 1 November 2019. The ban applies to ALL retailers – including supermarkets, greengrocers, bakeries, pharmacies, clothes stores, restaurants, cafes, markets, food outlets, and many more. The ban will apply to all lightweight plastic shopping bags which have a thickness of 35 microns or less at any part of the bag, including degradable, biodegradable and compostable bags. Sunday was the final day with record crowds for the weekend of over 2,500 coming through the International exhibition Liu Bolin Camouflage before flooding through the streets of Ballarat to enjoy the rich program positioned across Ballarat highlighting in the new National Centre For Photography. With over 29,000 unique visitors in two months, it has been another record crowd for the Biennale. MAIR STREET WORKS TO BEGIN

This project is a VicRoads project but an important part of the City of Ballarat's CBD Strategy: Making Ballarat Central. The next phase of works is planned to start in the next two weeks. The Victoria Street to Humffray Street section will take approximately six weeks to complete, while the Humffray to Davies Street section will take up to 14 weeks. RRV is committed to a no works period between December 1, 2019 and January 12, 2020 to allow for uninterrupted Christmas shopping on Mair Street. Read more »

CHANGES TO PUBLIC HOLIDAY SUBSTITUTION RULES

On 4 October 2019, terms allowing an employer to unilaterally substitute a public holiday or substitute a public holiday with agreement from the majority of their staff will be removed from awards that contain them. Instead, employers and individual employees can agree to substitute another day (or part-day) for a public holiday. BUSINESS CONFIDENCE SURVEY 

We are excited to share with you that we are working on a project with Federation Business School to evaluate business conditions in the Ballarat region. Our shared objective with this report is to assist local business and government at all levels when making future decisions on planning and direction. We hope to run this project at regular intervals, annually or once every two years, measuring how we are progressing as a region. Here is the link to the survey for the first round of this project, the project is led by Dr. Moulik Zaveri, lecturer at the Federation Business School.
