Not just another safety slogan: communication strategies to shape your safety message. The OHS Act 2004 places a duty on employers to consult with their employees on health and safety matters. For the most part, employers engage in communication about items of safety. However, most safety messaging fails to miss the mark by focussing on the ‘what’ of safety, instead of the ‘why’.

This session aims to provide you with:

  • Why safety messages create a threat response in the brain;
  • The neuroscience of successful communication;
  • How ISO45001 aims to the set the standard of safety communication; and
  • Steps to create ‘sticky safety messages’ that engage your workforce.

Understanding risk in small business, a session that just may save your business Oscars Hotel & Café Bar, 18 Doveton Street South, Ballarat

Time: 2:00pm - 4:00pm

Held as part of B31 Ballarat Business Month
Presented by Simplex Insurance Solutions

Cost: FREE (bookings essential)

Simplex Insurance Solutions is proud to host Professor Allan Manning from LMI Global, a leading expert in Insurance who will be sharing his expertise.  Understanding risk is a vital part of running any business regardless of size. There are an ever increasing number of risks, particularly through the heightened reliance on the internet, social media and greater risk management by larger organisations who have adopted strategies of passing the risk off onto smaller enterprises. This session will look at how to identify risk, measure it, and plan to avoid it. It will explain that insurance is not the total cost of risk, but the cost to transfer the risk away from the small business owner and their family, to an insurance company. It is therefore not about obtaining the cheapest price, but understanding the key covers available and ensuring that the policy coverage and the claims service of the insurer are in line with your risk appetite.
The hosts will be Insurance and Risk Management specialists who assist businesses at the time of a loss and the aim of this session is to ensure you have the appropriate knowledge and coverage in place for it is far too late after.

Breakfast workshop - Building a culture for Innovation Mercure
Date: Thursday 17th
Time: 7:30am - 9:30am

Cost: BIIG members free, $55 non members

Your business culture will either promote innovation or limit this.  It either encourages people to think about the organisation or think about themselves.  It encourages people to strive for excellence and growth in doing new and different things or to play it safe and keep out of trouble.

The way people think about novelty, risk and failure will have an enormous influence on whether innovation is a nice idea or a genuine way of doing things in your business.

In this workshop we will identify certain attitudes and behaviours either limit or promote innovation and effective problem solving.  The crucial role leaders play in encouraging either effective or ineffective behaviours in others will be explored along with practical tips.

Garry Trotter | Partner      SED Leadership & Culture

After several years in senior international leadership roles, Garry returned to Australia and in 2005 established SED Leadership & Culture.  The key objective of this business is to enable senior leaders to achieve their core purpose… ‘To create the environment where everyone can be their best’.  SED Leadership & Culture now works across a diverse range of clients drawing on a robust understanding of organisational psychology and leadership experience to devise practical, evidence based approaches to change.

Key outcomes of Garry’s work include senior leaders gaining significant insights into the gap between how they would like to impact on others and the actual impact they are having.  Significant shifts in leadership styles are the result of highly effective and sustainable behaviour change strategies.  At an organisational level, the impact of the current business culture on performance outcomes are understood, and senior leadership teams take responsibility for their role in creating a constructive culture based on common purpose and standards of excellence.

Leading Mindfully Housey Housey, 12 Armstrong Street North, Ballarat

Time: 3:00pm - 5:00pm

Held as part of B31 Ballarat Business Month
Presented by Leadership Ballarat & Western Region

In this two-hour workshop, Professor Amanda Sinclair will share stories and practices from over a decade of introducing mindfulness to many different groups of leaders. Drawing on her recent book “Leading Mindfully” and incorporating some of the latest cognitive neuroscience research, Amanda will show how small shifts in our habits of thinking and ways of being can help us be more effective in leadership as well as finding pleasure and enjoyment in the work. Amanda argues that mindfulness is uniquely suited to the day-to-day of leadership in families, schools, communities and other organisations; all those situations where we are seeking to influence others towards positive outcomes. For all of those who regularly feel captured by an expanding ‘to do’ list with insufficient time and energy for the things that matter, mindfulness promises a simple, sustainable and powerful path. Hosted by Leadership Ballarat & Western Region, the workshop will be experiential and interactive: an opportunity to practise mindfulness as well as learn about it.
