Around the world urban planners, government leaders, and city enthusiasts have trumpeted the rise of "smart cities." As that conversation gets louder, we can't help but ask: What exactly makes a city smart?

The City of Ballarat wants your ideas about what makes a city smart. Better online services? Better community engagement through digital channels? More opportunities to streamline business activity in the city? What's your idea?

The City of Ballarat has invited David Bartlett to deliver a community talk on what makes a smart city and what other cities around the world are doing to use technology better. David is the former Premier of Tasmania, digital futures specialist and has been listed as one of the Top 50 most influential people in technology in Australia.

In this engaging and entertaining talk David will tell stories collected from around the world and Australia to stimulate some ideas about how cities can make the most of the digital revolution for residents, ratepayers, visitors and business. He will discuss the implications of ubiquitous connectivity – the fact we nearly all have a smartphone in our pocket - and its impact on the way we create wealth, communicate with our customers and solve old and wicked city problems.
