A prominent Ballarat hotelier is leading a petition to rein in Ballarat City Council’s proposed borrowing and rate increases. Golden City Hotel owner Simon Cohglan said the council’s proposal to borrow $25 million and raise rates by nearly 30% in four years wasn’t a done deal if ratepayers stood up and made their voices heard. Addressed to the city’s nine councillors, it (the petition) calls on them to "scrap proposed borrowing, minimise rate increases and protect jobs for long term economic health of the Ballarat community." The petition is available at: http://chn.ge/184R42P

Ballarat photographer and filmmaker Erin McCuskey will explore human expression and decoration in her coming exhibition as part of the Ballarat International Foto Biennale. The exhibition of photographic works, Adorn, is inspired by hyper-stylised garb, such as rockabilly and burlesque. Part of the BIFB, Ms McCuskey’s curated exhibition of photographic works will be shown at the Eastern Station Hotel on the corner of Scott Parade and Humffray Street North, a variation on the standard gallery space which she embraced.

Whether it be in the form of fashion or rain, Krissy Papworth is no stranger to Ballarat wild winters. But no flood was going to stop the owner of 8 Below from re-opening her beloved eclectic clothing business after extensive flood damage forced her to relocate. With an idea to offer people a taste of Melbourne fashion, Krissy has had her heart set on sharing the season’s hottest trends with Ballarat. "I wanted to offer people an affordable exclusive place to shop."

Digital collection cataloguing at the Gold Museum has been fast tracked by a $5000 grant from The Courier. Gold Museum curator Rodger Trudgeon said once cataloguing was completed by staff and more than 80 volunteers, items would be available on internet collection site eHive as well as Trove, the database operated by the National Library. The Courier editor Andrew Eales said it was important to preserve Ballarat’s history.

Ballarat’s tourism industry received a boost as visitors flocked to the city over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend but small business owners are still doing it tough, a local cafe owner says. Commerce Ballarat executive officer Jodie Gillett said although penalty rates could be prohibitive, it was important for businesses to stay open on public holidays. she said the Ballarat City Council and Ballarat Regional Tourism (BRT) are doing a great job bringing people to Ballarat. " You can’t have businesses open if the streets are empty," Ms Gillett said.

Thursday 13 June

Ratepayers will be able to have their say about the City of Ballarat’s recent draft budget at a public forum at the museum of Australian Democracy at Eureka this Sunday at 2:30pm. Former Mayors James Coghlan and John Barnes will join UnitingCare Ballarat executive director Cliff Barclay and a representative from the Victorian Farmers Federation panel. "We hope that the forum will enable ratepayers to attend and understand the budget process better," said Dennis Bateman, President of the Ballarat Residents and Ratepayers Association. The forum comes as Ballarat hotelier Simon Coghlan leads a petition to curb the council’s proposed borrowing and rate increases.

The 12 'next big things’ that really matter to business and the global economy

Source: Marketing Magazine, 11 June, 2013

As 'next new thing’ fatigue reaches exhausting levels, driven by the hyping of almost any new advance in technology as such, new analysis by McKinsey Global Institute has sought to cut through the hype and identify the technologies that will really matter, assessing the impact they will have on life, business and the global economy by the year 2025. McKinsey Global Institute, the business and economics research arm of McKinsey and Company, has highlighted 12 disruptive technologies as part of its ongoing remit to delve into the evolving global economy and promote understanding. As the authors point out, business leaders can’t wait until evolving technologies are having their full effects to determine which developments are truly big things. "They need to understand how the competitive advantages on which they have based strategy might erode or be enhanced a decade from now by emerging technologies," states the report, which was authored by James Manyika, Michael Chui, Jacques Bughin, Rochard Dobbs, Peter Bisson and Alex Marrs. But these aren’t just 12 novelties - the report assesses the potential reach and scope as well as the economic impact of the areas of technology, with each area required to meet certain criteria to be included on the list: the economic impact must be potentially disruptive, the technology must be rapidly advancing or experiencing breakthroughs, it must have broad potential scope of impact, and have the potential to affect significant economic value. The final list of 12 was whittled down from more than 100. Here they are, in no particular order, starting with...
1. Mobile internet
The technology: Increasingly inexpensive mobile computing devices and internet connectivity.
The numbers:
• $1.7 trillion: global GDP related to the internet,
• $5 million versus $400: price of fastest supercomputer in 1975 versus modern iPhone equal in performance, and
• 4.3 billion: world population not yet connected to the internet.  Read article>>>

The five essentials for building your App

Source: Anthony McGovern, 11 June, 2013

Based on his own recent first-hand experience, here Sydney-based graphic designer, photographer and small business owner Anthony McGovern explains five essentials you must know before developing an App for your business.

1. YOUR MARKET
Make sure you are offering an App with a difference, whether it is something completely new, or a better version of what is out there right now:
• Don't imitate; innovate!
• Make it an App people will want to use and share.
• Research the market to the right demographic.
2. THE NAME
The name is so important; I can't stress this enough. In securing the name for your App:
• Research to make sure it is not taken. This goes not just for iTunes or the App Store, but for Facebook and all social media outlets you plan to use, as well as domain names.
• If you are going global, I recommend the trademark process (Madrid Protocol at least, which covers you in 98 countries), but this can be expensive. Very much worth protecting your brand, though!
• Secure your name as soon as you can on iTunes by starting the upload process on iTunes. You can upload the binary within 120 days of this - if you are not confident your final binary will be ready in 120 days, don’t do this until you are. Read article>>>
