Meet the Founder - Peter Law, Founder, Australian Independent Rural RetailersDate:21 May 2013 Non Members: Free Members: TBA Details: Venue: Brewery Lecture Theatre SMB Campus, Ballarat University Lydiard St Sth, Ballarat Email : carmen.doyle@nicta.com.au Phone: 0293762000 Details: Australian Independent Rural Retails (AIRR) was established in 2006 by Peter Law in rural Victoria. Growing up and working in the area from a young age gave him the stepping stones to create a business which is run, regardless of growth, as a ‘country' business that has deep and sincere customer dealings and relationships, with a solid focus on supporting Australian farming communities.
Aware of a market gap, Peter used his investment savings and superannuation as capital to create the Australia-wide distribution network for rural customers. AIRR was formulated by creating a unique model from observing failures indentified within the rural industry plus a model that rewarded loyalty. In 2008 AIRR had an initial public offering to form an unlisted public company, with shares being offered to members and employees. Peter holds 23% of the shares.
The business has grown to a turnover of over $300 million and near 20% market share within six years. Rapid growth can place a cash burden on operations. To limit this risk, Peter has concentrated on growth that is strategic, organic and focused on the areas of maximum return. The business uses its strategic and collective buying power to source better and cheaper products, on-selling these products to both member retailers and the outside market. Members earn their own profits in their business and then share the profits made by the group based on a percentage of total turnover. AIRR opened its eighth distribution centre in 2012, currently employs 85 people and has 135 members who operate more than 219 rural retail stores. The company has also developed its own chemical brand, ‘Apparent'.
Part of AIRR's success is its core principles which include employing and empowering the best staff, being open and honest, and having fun along the way. The board brings a diverse, objective and challenging element to management's delivery on strategy. The main key to this has been creating and maintaining loyal and honest relationships which Peter says are “gold†in country Australia and therefore changing the way business is done in rural Australia.
Come listen to Peter chat about his entrepreneurial experience with our interviewer and be inspired!

TP/BICT BreakfastDate:21 May 2013 Non Members: $20.00 Members: $20.00 Details: Venue: Greenhill Enterprise Centre iiNet Conference Room, Technology Park, University of Ballarat Email : j.anson@ballarat.edu.au Phone: 5327 9893 Details: The University of Ballarat Technology Park Breakfast brings together information and communications technology professionals and other stakeholders from Ballarat and the broader region.
The Challenges of Building a Small Business The Australian Bureau of Statistics tells us that at any point in time, over half a million Australians are involved in early stage entrepreneurial activity. Of those start-up companies (nascent firms), 50% will never achieve venture creation. The 50% that make it though, are on an upward journey. In fact, 78% of those young firms will continue to exist, grow and account for just under half of the private sector industry. So what does it take to belong to the latter 50%? According to the Commonwealth Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education (DIISRTE) the use of innovative activity–whether that be marketing methods or the introduction of significantly improved operational, organisational or managerial processes–is one of the main factors associated with those success stories. The biggest barrier to that type of innovation, however, is the lack of skilled personnel (as reported by 65% of young firms). How then, as a nascent company that is not yet operational, do you find the right skills? How do you develop your product and market it on a shoestring? What are some of the challenges and pitfalls that you will have to face? Guest Speakers: Michèle Fitz-Gerald and Dr Cameron Foale, CDMsystems Michèle Fitz-Gerald is a director at CDMsystems and one of the creators of the online role-playing game Grammatikus. A local upcoming company, CDMsystems designs and develops digital learning platforms and is dedicated to educational and entertaining programs that engage and inspire young Australians. Before founding CDMsystems, Michèle had previous experience with taking an innovative concept and bringing it to market, when her husband introduced Paintball games to Australia in the late 1980s. With a near 20-year experience as a business owner, Michèle also has a BA (Hons) specialising in languages. As a director, mother and blogger, Michèle believes in having a vision, passion, persistence and making things happen. Dr. Cameron Foale has been involved in the local technology sector for over 15 years, with a broad array of projects under his belt, including making cars safer, career moves simpler, communication easier and video games more immersive. In addition, Cameron has helped teach a range of IT courses at UB. He is currently working at CDMsystems making education fun and engaging for early high-school students.
