Jana Pittman Bio
It was apparent from the very outset of her outstanding career that Jana Pittman was destined for greatness. Coached by Jackie Byrnes and training alongside Olympic sprinter, Melinda Gainsford, Jana qualified for her first World Youth Championships (U18) in 1999 at the tender age of 16. She made a spectacular international debut winning the 400m hurdles and making the final of the 400m. In 2000, Jana continued to leap from strength to strength equalling the world junior record for the 400m hurdles and achieving a rare double at the World Junior (U20) event in Santiago, winning both the 400m and 400m hurdles. Still only 16 years of age, she was selected for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and topped off an already stellar year winning the IAAF ‘Rising Star' Award in recognition of her achievements on the track. While still in her teens, Jana continued to shine beating a world class field to win the prestigious Paris Golden League in 2002. Later in the year, coached by Craig Hilliard, she won her first senior title at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester in the 400m hurdles and anchored the 4x400m relay team to gold running alongside idol, Catherine Freeman. After the Commonwealth Games, Jana joined forces with Phil King, husband and coach of 1988 Olympic Champion, Debbie Flintoff. In early 2003, she reached one of the highlights of her career when she came head to head with former relay teammate Catherine Freeman in the 400m and became the only person in 7 years to beat her. She cemented her place at the forefront of the international arena a few months later at the World Championships in Paris, winning the gold and becoming the youngest 400m hurdles Olympic or World Champion in history (male or female). In the lead up to the Athens Olympics in 2004, an injury to Jana's knee all but sounded the abrupt and devastating end to her season. However, against all odds, a second opinion and operation in London put her back on the track just 15 days later revealing the incredible willpower and determination behind this inspiring and dedicated athlete. Although competing in Athens was an achievement in itself, the result at those Games fell short of the high standards Jana holds herself to and the memory of it still haunts her to this day. Jana began training with coach Chris Rawlinson in 2005. Injuries continued to slow her previously unstoppable momentum all throughout this year. However, a triumphant return to the track in March 2006 saw Jana retain her Commonwealth title in front of a home crowd at the MCG and set up an impassable lead to ensure Australia retained the 4x400m gold medal. In December that year, Jana reached a different kind of highlight giving birth to her first child, a son named Cornelius. After a sabbatical of a few years due to injury, Jana is hoping to get back on track very soon. Jana hopes to continue running till the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane in 2018. Jana is realistic about her injury hampered career so has set about opening her own Personal Training and Corporate Speaking Business. As a result Jana launched PittFit in March this year.
